about

It stands to reason that the pandemic has spawned so many guitar instrumental records, but you’d be hard-pressed to find one in the vein of Music of the Years Gone By. its selections span centuries, from J.S. Bach to some of Frank Sinatra’s signature “saloon songs” to El-Solh’s own originals. But if you’re imagining rote run-throughs of this material on a nylon string or on a cranked-down amp in a Starbucks, you couldn’t be further from the mark. With breathtaking skill and sensitivity to his source material, El-Solh turns in a record of ballads that is often as unsettling—and sometimes heavy—as it is gorgeous.

Music of the Years Gone By’s 22 minutes are full of styles and musical impulses that may, on paper, seem contradictory. However, the lightning ride through music history it takes us on doesn’t really feel like a journey at all. Every track is firmly grounded in El-Solh’s bold and inimitable voice as a stylist, resulting in an unforgettable album that is as fun and accessible as it is accomplished.
